Projekt Green Transition in Vocational Education and Training from GeTinVET to GeTinVET 2.0

Cross-Border Vocational Training for Sustainable Competence – Practical Implementation and Application of Project Results

The EU’s Green Deal identifies building systems technology as a key factor in achieving the European Union’s climate goals. The requirements for workers in this field are similar across Europe. They must understand a building as a holistic and complex system. This means that skilled workers in traditional trades must collaborate more closely with one another and expand their expertise with qualifications from fields outside their traditional areas of specialization. Often, different professions work “hand in hand” to offer customers a cost-effective and climate-neutral solution. The GeTinVET project addresses this aspect as early as initial vocational training to foster an initial understanding of the potential consequences of one’s own actions (the sustainability aspect). The project also supports the need to view the European labor market as a whole and to prepare trainees in the relevant professions for the changing demands of the working world. This is achieved through the consistent implementation of labor market requirements in the development of interdisciplinary learning modules, including concrete materials for use and further development.

The project results help support the guidelines for achieving climate protection goals in the building sector. The “sustainability competencies” integrated into each learning module increase resource efficiency and support systemic change. The survey results and the early identification of skills needs help future professionals (as well as companies) develop the skills that are currently relevant to strengthen sustainable competitiveness in Europe.

A central goal of the Erasmus+ GeTinVET partnership—coordinated by the EU Office of the Cologne District Government—was therefore to align the skills offered to apprentices in initial vocational training in traditional skilled trades within the field of building systems technology with the necessary qualification requirements of the future by developing interdisciplinary learning modules. This project was completed in September 2025 and has been recognized as a “good practice” project by the National Agency for Education for Europe.

From GeTinVET to GeTinVET 2.0
Once the project is complete, the project results will be put to practical use to facilitate joint learning among Dutch and German trainees:

By utilizing the project’s results in vocational schools in North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands beyond the project’s duration, cross-border cooperation between North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands in key vocational fields is particularly promoted. Apprentices in the trades of roofing, electronics for energy and building technology, and plant mechanics learn across trades in vocational scenarios relevant to the labor market. The key feature of the project is that the learning groups are mixed in such a way that a trade from North Rhine-Westphalia (e.g., roofers) always collaborates with a different trade from the Netherlands (e.g., electronics technicians). This not only promotes binational exchange. Rather, the learning modules are designed so that the professional challenge can only be solved by combining the skills of both trades. The learning modules (and interdisciplinary skills) were aligned with labor market requirements as part of an empirical study. Based on the results of the study, a competency overview (Units for Learning Outcomes) was created, which makes it possible to compare the qualifications of various vocational training programs in the Netherlands and Germany. The exchange programs are certified by Europass Mobility and the EU Office of the Cologne District Government.

GeTinVET meets District President of the Cologne District Administration
The results of the GeTinVET project were presented on 28 May 2026 at a supra-regional event held at the Cologne District Government offices, attended by the District President. On this occasion, particular emphasis was placed on the significance of the project’s findings for the Rhineland mining region and cross-border mobility with the Netherlands. We see ourselves as a region affected by structural change and one that must explore new avenues, including in a cross-border context! GeTinVET will help to make this possible:

GETinVET meets EU coordinators
The project’s findings were presented on 2 July 2026 at the EU coordination meeting organised by the EU Office of the Cologne Regional Government. Here, too, the focus was on practical experiences regarding the application of the project’s findings between North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands.
