Matrix for the systematic recording of sustainability
competence in the field of Building Service Engineering. (Workpackage 3)
Sustainability competence is to be given special importance in the development of the interdisciplinary learning modules. Therefore, a second matrix for sustainability competence was created in this work package. This matrix is to show along the professional action competence what sustainable thinking and acting means esp. for the field of activity of Building Service Engineering. The basic structure of this matrix is also to be based on core work processes and can be used in conjunction with the competence matrix created in work package 2 to develop the interdisciplinary learning modules.
Main results of this work package
1) Questionnaire for the empirical investigation of sustainability competence in the field of activity Building Service Engineering (Europe-wide).
A questionnaire: The questionnaire comprised a total of 40 questions and three main sections. The questionnaires were translated into the respective national languages of the participating countries. The survey was conducted by using google-forms. The first part of the questionnaire contained general questions about the companies participating in the survey. The second part comprised general questions on the topic of sustainability, and the third part consisted of questions relating to core building services engineering work processes. A total of 119 companies from the participating partner countries took part in the survey.
2) Evaluation and publication of the empirical study
The majority of respondents work in the areas of repair and maintenance (32%), installation of technical building equipment (22%) and technical building management (16%). The majority of respondents focus on electrical installation and building automation (31%) as well as heating, cooling and ventilation systems and sanitation (32%). 97% of respondents consider sustainability to be very important or important. 92% of respondents considered it very important or important to promote interdisciplinary cooperation in order to address sustainability challenges in the field of building technology. It was striking that companies from Germany rated the ‘sustainability competence’ of their trainees lowest among all participating partner countries. The results underline the increasing importance of sustainability competence in vocational training.

3) Matrix on sustainable action competence in the field of Building Service Engineering
The main objective of this work package was to create a second matrix for sustainability competence. This matrix shows the dimensions of sustainable thinking and action for the entire field of building systems technology. The basic structure of the competence matrix is also based on the VQTS model and shows areas of competence relevant to sustainable action and thinking in building service enginnering along the horizontal axis. The areas of competence increase in complexity and are described in more detail within the matrix.

4) A commented evaluation on the use of the project results of work package 3
The usability of the results was evaluated internally at the 3rd project meeting. At and after the project meeting, the competence matrix was mainly discussed, commented on by the partners and transferred into the final version to date.
